Ian was brave enough to not only submit one drawing but a couple. hehe. This took about 20 min. and I used a small wacom tablet and worked inside photoshop.

John Lennon at age 70

Tonight I was just sitting around listening to John Lennon music on the 30th anniversary of his murder and I started imagining what he would look like today if he hadn't died 30 years ago. I was compelled to sketch or scribble this 'what if" out from my head.... John Lennon at age 70, painted as if it were 2010.

Caricature of Garrett Morlan

Garrett Morlan is a facebook friend who took the caricature challenge and sent me a caricature of myself last week. When people do this, I put them on my list and do their caricature as soon as I can on facebook. Garrett has a very strong handsome bone structure and was easy and fun to draw.

Caricature of Mark Gustafson

Mark is an old friend I worked with years ago at Will Vinton Studios. Today he is an animation director at Laika. I had done a digital portrait for his fiance about 6 weeks ago, but it was a straight portrait. So today I thought I would throw in a caricature as well. This was done with a wacom tablet in photoshop, and the whole process took about 15 min.

Robot-001

Sometimes when I can't think of anything to draw, I'll lapse into drawing something I've enjoyed sketching since I was a little boy. I love drawing robots - any sort of robots. Today, while waiting for inspiration to come I sketched a robot.... inspiration never came but I was left with a drawing of a robot instead.

Sketch of Leonardo Da Vinci

Today I was inspired by a small poster on the wall of Da Vinci's iconic self portrait. I tried to imagine what he would look like sitting in front of me from a different angle. This is my take on sketching an imaginary Leonardo. This is a digital painting done with a small Wacom Bamboo 4x6" digital tablet in a program called Photoshop. It took me about 30 min. to draw.

Self Portrait from an Alternate Universe

After a few months off, I'm sliding back into my rut of doing at least one sketch or painting a day. I guess the slacking off from drawing was just too difficult for me to keep up. Today's speedpainting of this sketch has music that was commposed by Trevin Hughes, a facebook friend. Trevin's music is called "Unatural Selection (Mystro88)". The sketch was done digitally with a wacom bamboo 4x6" tablet in Photoshop. It took about 30 min.

Sketch of Clint Eastwood

Today I decided to start up my "One Sketch A Day" project I had going on Facebook. It really isn't very hard to keep up. My criteria is simple: Anything that is a drawing or a painting that takes me as little as a minute to draw or 8 hours or more. Usually what I'll post are things that take me around 30 minutes. I'm doing this to stay in the habbit of doing at least one thing a day that is drawing or painting. I took a few months off after doing this for over a year and three months, but I miss doing it. :-)

A Tree On A Hill

Today I'm just doodling in my new copy of Photoshop CS5, experimenting with the new brush features and trying to learn how to use the new functions. This was done with a wacom bamboo digital tablet which is about 4x6 inches and it took about 30 min. to sketch from my head.

Rough caricature of Sarah Jessica Parker

Okay, I'm always doodling with my wacom tablet on the computer. It is not like I quit doing my daily sketches, just I've been lax about posting lately. In this sketch, I used a very large brush, which was about 4 times bigger than my comfort zone. I did this so I wouldn't get caught up in all the crazy details I love to render. I wanted to focus on just the broad shapes this sketch. If you squint your eyes so you see the basic shapes of a painting and it looks bad, then all the details and rendering in the world isn't going to make it a better piece. I think Jessica is a very attractive woman. I know that a few of the artists over at caricaturama showdown, the weekly caricature contest on facebook, have made her look like a horse. I personally think strong jaws are very attractive . :-)

Hug Point-001

Today I visited an area of the Oregon coast I've never seen before. It's called Hug Point and it contains a small waterfall and many rock caves that open up onto the ocean or beaches depending on the tide table. This took about 20 min. to paint and its watercolor on canvas paper.

Sketch of a Seagull

Graphite on paper - maybe 2 min. - very quick. In a few days I'll be going to the Oregon Coast for a vacation. I'm trying to get into the mood for some ocean. :-)

Sketch of Michael Cera

This isn't exagerated enough to be called a caricature but it is more exagerated than a good portrait would be. I drew this with a burnt umber prismacolor pencil and it took about 15 min. The thing about prismacolor pencils is that they do not erase easily so I usually get stuck with lines I don't really want if I'm not careful.

Caricature of Michael Cera

This was a sketch I made today for the caricaturama showdown contest group on facebook. It is watercolor washes on paper. It took about 55 min.
